[Sept. 2026] The decommissioning of thermal power plants in the EU is reaching its peak, particularly for those power plants that are lignite or coal fuelled. While full attention was dedicated to such processes and efforts concentrated on marketing the used TPP in the second-hand market for resale, almost all operators ignored the adjacent open-pit mines.
Capital costs are capital costs! Often owners or shareholders of thermal power plants are private or stock-listed companies. The same does not necessarily apply for the ownership of open-pit mines. These are often state-owned or have mixture of public-private ownership. Hence, maximising capital cost regains is for these shareholders equally important as for the owners of thermal power plants that are already decommissioned or are in the process of getting decommissioned.
SPRINT! experts have therefore been asked to valuate also the rest market value of the open-pit mining machines, i.e. the heavy-weight equipment and the extensive spare parts storages by using the highly recognised troveo© Valuation Method.
Similar to the rest market value of power plants, open-pit second-hand mining equipment in top condition is also in demand and when properly marketed, generated residual value to the benefit of their owners.
